The Corona Virus - First Successes in Drug Development?
For the current occasion, the Austrian-American Society invited to a top-class expert lecture. Moderated by Johannes Dobretsberger (Oracle Austria GmbH), the globally sought-after molecular biologist Prof. Dr. Josef Penninger held a lecture on the status quo and gave an outlook. ÖAG President Philipp Bodzenta and General Secretary Rainer Newald welcomed numerous guests as well as journalists and media, who enjoyed the lecture on this brand new topic as well as the subsequent exciting discussion and the opportunity to ask questions to the recognized scientist and also brought new and interesting information and experiences with them. Even if this virus is something that so far has been something completely new, research is being carried out at full speed and the speed and dynamism of the pharmaceutical industry give cause for hope.
Prof. Dr. Josef Penninger was scientific director at the IMBA (Institute for Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences) in Vienna and took over the management of the Life Sciences Institute at the University of British Columbia in 2018. In 2014 he received Austria's most important science award with the Wittgenstein Prize. The Viennese biotechnology company Apeiron, co-founded by Prof. Penninger, has been researching a drug against SARS since 2005, which is now also used against Covid-19 and is currently being tested in China.
